Academics - NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
A small, liberal arts college housed within a major research university, Gallatin attracts creative, self-motivated students who seek to design their own course of study. Students work closely with faculty advisers to create distinctive academic concentrations that allow them to bring together interests from across a wide range of disciplines.In the 2018-2019 admissions cycle, NYU received over 84,000 applications and accepted 12,307, an acceptance rate of 16%, the most selective NYU has ever been. For this cycle, the median SAT score was a 1480. NYU requires only one essay, so it’s especially important to write the best essay possible.Gallatin’s MA Program is comprised of recent college graduates, those interested in changing the focus of their careers, as well as professionals seeking to enhance their existing expertise. What they have in common is the motivation to embrace the challenge of interdisciplinary study and the independence and intellectual curiosity to shape and direct their course of study.
Readings will include essays by poets Denise Levertov, Robert Pinsky, Robert Haas, James Fenton and essays in the semiotics of music. My own work (archived in NYU’s Fales Library), which explores a range of these strategies with my band The Jazz Passengers and singers Elvis Costello, Mavis Staples and Debbie Harry will also be discussed.The cornerstone of the Gallatin School is its individualized approach to education. Gallatin puts the individual student first. With the support and guidance of faculty advisers, students design unique courses of study, exploring multiple disciplines or various perspectives on specific areas of study not available in traditional departments.
The Concentration. At Gallatin, students develop individualized programs of study, the central focus of which is the concentration. Designed by students in consultation with their adviser, a Gallatin concentration is based on a student’s academic and professional goals, and is not simply a substitute for a traditional undergraduate major.
